Your child will be able to get free school meals if they’re in a government-funded school and in:

• Reception class
• Year 1
• Year 2

Important Changes from September 2026

From September 2026, the Government is updating how Free School Meal (FSM) eligibility is assessed for families receiving Universal Credit. There are now two types of FSM support:

Targeted Free School Meals

For families on Universal Credit with household earnings of £7,400 or below. Includes:

• A free school meal every day

• Access to the Holiday Activities & Food (HAF) programme

• Pupil Premium funding for the school to provide additional educational support

Expanded Free School Meals

For families on Universal Credit above the £7,400 threshold. Includes:

• A free school meal every day

• Access to the HAF programme

• No Pupil Premium funding

Transitional Protection Ending

Government transitional protection ends on 31 July 2026. This means:

• Eligibility will now be checked annually

• Some families may become eligible for the first time

• Some families currently receiving FSM may no longer qualify

Action Required

All families receiving Universal Credit must check their eligibility from 1 July to ensure FSM entitlement for September 2026.
