Literacy

• Literacy is taught discretely through daily phonics sessions, using Rocket Phonics and 4 English carpet times per week, which are based around our key texts set out in ‘The Big Picture’.  
• Literacy is also explored during Get Learning, both inside and outside, with activities selected which compliment and develop learning from both phonics and English sessions in a creative and exciting manner.
• The book corner provides constant access to a wide range of texts, which are regularly changed. This area is a space for children to explore books and develop their love of reading, which is sustained throughout their time at St John’s.
• Children are also sent home with 3 books to explore at home. They are given a fully decodable book matched to their phonics knowledge, a book matched to their reading level and they have free choice of a book from the KS1 library.
